Solvang Century

The very first "Solvang Century" was held in 1983 to raise funds for a club debt. In 1982, the SCOR Cardiac Cyclists Club sent 14 riders on a non-stop relay ride from the Avenue of the Stars in Century City to the Avenue of Flags in New York City in 12 days, 1 hour and 50 minutes. While most of the expenses were paid for, the bottom line was that SCOR owed $2000.00. Up until 1983 the primary club fund-raisers had been paper and aluminum can drives! It was clear that it would take a lot of newspapers and cans to raise $2000.00!

Instead, SCOR decided to take a club ride it had been doing in Solvang since 1975 and open it up to the public. The result was 300 riders and a ride was born. Although inexperienced in putting on rides, the ride worked well enough; 1200 riders came the following year! Since then the ride has grown to 3700 riders in 1998. A second venue was opened in Santa Maria in 1989. A half-century option was added in 1994 due to continued requests for a shorter route.

Over the years, SCOR has always striven to emphasize safety (we were one of the first rides to make helmets mandatory) as well as service. Our accident rate of one broken bone per 224,000 man-miles ridden in the last 19 years is lower than the accident rate training where you live, suggesting that you as a rider are safer in our rides despite the larger number of participants. The money we have raised goes to heart related projects, Camp Bon Couer , Make a Wish Foundation, Six TEAM SCORs in the Race Across AMerica (RAAM) Relay Division, the AXA World Team Ride, Camp Del Corazon on Catalina Island and Camp Taylor .

Click on each Camp link to donate directly to the congenital heart disease camp(s) of your choice. Service provided by Active.com Giving program.

We welcome your comments and suggestions as we strive to create an event that meets the needs of all recreational cyclists in this beautiful rural area.

Free Bikeway Map

  • The 2006 edition of the Santa Barbara County Bike Map is currently available. It's absolutely beautiful and available free from the Traffic Solutions office. For a printed copy, email Joann Hart . The map is additionally available online in a number of segments to view and print. The individual files are large, so be patient. Choose from North County maps, or South County maps.
  • The project was underwritten by Traffic Solutions (a division of the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments) and Caltrans District 5. Members of the Bicycle Coalition and bicycle clubs throughout the County helped verify and recommend the large network of bikeways shown. The map also contains bike safety tips, legal information, and useful contacts.
  • Only paved routes are shown on the map. For off-road biking, look at the book list and online sources near the bottom of this page. Or check with a local bike shop.
  • Here is a detail of the map showing how to use the Coast Route which passes through the University of California, Santa Barbara campus.
  • Perhaps the nicest enhancement to bicycling is the network of named bike routes on the South Coast. The colored routes on the map reflect the 324 South Coast bikeway route signs that were installed late in 1998.
  • Pictures and information about creation of the bikeway signage program can be found at this page of the site of signage consultant Jack Biesek . Two elements of the signage program that have yet to be funded are in-street bike logos along the routes, and several "wayfinding" maps of the entire network on permanent pedestals at key South Coast locations.
  • Layout for the map was done by Maps.com . We're delighted with this fine and very popular guide to bicycling.
